Drak Yerpa and Meditation CavesDrak Yerpa is one of the four meditation places in Tibet. It is located in the northeast of Lhasa city and only a short drive can arrive. The monastery has a long history of 1500 years. It was built by Songtsen Gampo for his Tibetan queen, Monza Triucham, in the 7th century. The specialty of the monastery is its meditation caves. There were 108 meditation caves in the past but now only 10 caves are open to the public. Thus, it is also known as "the monastery built in caves". The monastery is spreading over the mountain, so you need to climb the stairs to reach each cave. There also scattered some pagodas on the mountain slope, facing the river through the valley. The meditation caves include Songtsen Gampo meditation cave, Guru Rinpoche meditation cave, Ashita medication cave and etc. In different caves, you can see Buddhist statues and wall paintings. |
