House of Shambhala and Shambhala Palace,Tibetan Run and Typical accommodation

Each Shambhala Serai Heritage Hotel is a loving restoration of a historic building, and is located at a revered energy source. From 2005 to the present, each restoration has been completed by a team of fifty Tibetan artisan craftsmen. All lanterns, bedspreads and pillow cases, and most other fixtures and decorations, used at the hotels are produced by women and disabled artisans supported through micro-finance programs operated by Shambhala. The Tibetan Tiger rugs featured at the hotels are the result of an artisan revival program undertaken by Shambhala to rejuvenate traditional natural dying and weaving techniques and are produced by a commune of women weavers. Shambhala Serai Heritage Hotels are true community efforts and reflect the pride of local residents in their own traditions and identities. Return to our homepage!

Travel stories from www.tripadvisor.com

If you are expecting western hotel facilities and amenities don't stay here. In fact to be honest you will find it difficult to find anywhere that would suit you in Lhasa. This is Tibet, the top of the world and not London.
The House of Shambhala was clean, friendly and convenient, however we found it to be expensive too. We had booked through an agency and were charged 600 yuan per night for a standard room. We found that room to be too small and so 'upgraded' to a large room for which we were charged an extra 350 yuan a night. After converting to pounds this worked out at about £100 a night for what was not much more than a 'trendy' hostel. The sheets were not changed at all during our 5 night stay, the breakfast was just ok, eggs, toast, fruit (if they can get it). tea or coffee, pancakes and yak yoghurt (not really to my taste but hey!!)
The staff were very friendly and helpful, the positioning of the hotel was perfect being a 2 minute walk to the main market area and old Lhasa. the decor is warm and cozy with plenty of Tibentan antiques and artworks dotted around.

I would definately recommend to anyone who wants something different but expect to pay 4 star hotel prices for a definately not 4 star experience. In fact we had come from the Shangri la in Beijing having spent less on a premier room in the Valley club wing of the hotel."

1) "After staying one night in a grubby hostel in Lhasa, my two sisters and I stumbled upon the House of Shambhala and decided to 'upgrade' to a hotel for the remainder of our stay. The rooms are gorgeous, traditionally Tibetan in style but with modern fixtures and fittings. After some of the places we had slept in on our travels we were really thrilled with our room. This is a small, Tibetan run hotel and I have to say the staff were just amazing - so warm and friendly and they went out of their way to make our stay welcome. I was sick for some of my stay and was checked on every couple of hours and brought flasks of tea - I can't imagine that happening in a Western hotel! I notice some comments mentioned that staff didn't have good English, that wasn't my experience, in fact some had excellent English. I'd highly recommend a stay in this lovely spot in downtown Lhasa."

2) "We have just got back from Lhasa having stayed in the House of Shambhala. From their web sites, trip advisor members comments and other guides it seemed like the place we wanted to be.
