Drepung Monastery 9 am-12:00Tibet Monastery tour program one: In the morning, our Tibet Travel Expert tour guide and driver will pick you up from hotel in the morning at 8:40 am and transfer to visit Drepung Monastery, one of the three greatest Gelug Monasteries in Tibetan Buddhism. Drepung is quiet and intimate, and the sightseeing is stunning, the villages around the monastery is very picturesque with local people walking up and down the narrow alleys. Drepung Monastery, called Drepung Gompa in Tibetan, was founded at the foot of Mount Gambo Utse “Gephel” in 1416. It is on the outskirts of west Lhasa city and it was Tibet's largest and most influential monastery housing 10,000 monks in history. Drepung Monastery is one of the largest "great three" Gelukpa university monasteries of Tibet with the other two called Ganden and Sera Monastery behind. But today, Drepung Monastery houses about 700 monks and attracts thousands of pilgrims and visitors from around the world. Drepung is the largest of all Tibetan monasteries and is located on the Gambo Utse The meaning of “Drepung” refers to a monastery of collecting rice because the white painted walls of the monastery appear like a mound of rice if viewed from a far. After the funding in 1416, Drepung monastery welcomed the first living Buddha in 1546. The most well known feature of the monastery is its large white pagodas and typical monastery architecture. The famous annual Tibetan Shoton Festival celebration with its dramatic unfurling of a giant Thangka painting is held on the hillside which is just opposite to Drepung Monastery. So Drepung Monastery is a big highlight attraction in Lhasa and it becomes more and more popular in Tibet tour. |

Sera Monastery 2:30 pm-5:00pm1 day Tibet Monastery Tour program two: In the afternoon, finally it comes to the exciting moment of highlight monk’s debate in Sera Monastery. At 3:00 pm (except Sundays), the monks will gather together and challenge each other on matters of philosophy which is impressive and memorable. The Sera Monastery (founded in 1419 by Jamchen Chojey of Sakya Yeshe, disciple of Tsongkhapa) is just located at the foot of Tatipu Hill,located 1.25 miles (2.01 km) north of Lhasa and about 5 km (3.1 mi) north of the Jokhang and it is about 6 km to the northeast direction of Potala Palace. It is famous for the Buddhism activities of” Monks Debate” which happens in afternoon from Monday to Saturday. This is one highlight attraction for travel in Lhasa Tibet. Sera Monastery is one of three famous Gelugpa or Yellow Hat Sect monasteries in Lhasa. The other two are Drepung Monastery and the Ganden Monastery. The Gelugpa or Yellow Hat Sect is branch of Tibetan Buddhism which was founded by Tsong Khapa. Jamchen Chojey, one of Tsong Khapa's disciples built the monastery in 1419 during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). The monastery was named Sera which refers to wild rose in the Tibetan language, because the hill behind it was covered with wild roses in bloom when the monastery was built. |
