Facts on Qinghai Tibet Train travel: Ticketing and Altitude Sickness

  1. Trains run on fairly low altitude from sea level till Xining. Trains can depart from Beijing/Chengdu/Shanghai/Xi'an/Guangzhou/Lanzhou/Chongqing to Lhasa but all go through Xining. To travel flexibily, you can also arrive in Xining by air before transfering to the train.
  2. Xining to Lhasa train takes 1 day and is helpful with altitude aclimatization. However, this doesn't mean flying to Lhasa will definitely cause altitude sickness. No matter how you arrive in Lhasa, it is always important to rest well for a few days.
  3. In low tour season (April, November, December, January and February), train tickets are normally widely available and booking can be guaranteed.
  4. In high tour season (May, June, July, August, September, early October), train tickets are in high demand and often sold out. To solve this situation, we usually suggest that foreign tourists fly to Lhasa and take train when leaving Tibet.
  5. Train tickets are only released and available for booking about 30 days in advance, and there are many government regulations in the market. It is always a good idea to ask your Tibet travel agency for help.
