Day2

Lhasa highlight walking tour: Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Bazaar

Potala Palace, one of Tibet’s top must see cultural sites, has been capturing travelers’ imaginations as it takes them on an adventure through Tibetan history. With its highest point at about 300 meters (around 1000 feet) above the valley floor its gargantuan size often surprises travelers: this building houses over 1,000 rooms, 10,000 shrines, and around 200,000 statues.

Jokhang Temple is one of the must see attractions in Tibet. Jokhang Temple houses the only known image of the Shakyamuni Buddha that exists today. Made in his twelve year old likeness, it is a holy destination for Tibetan Buddhist pilgrims from all corners of Tibet.

The Barkhor street market provides tourist a pivotal insight in multiple aspects of Tibetan culture by the vast assortments of authentic Tibetan products easily available to purchase at the visitors discretion. The Barkhor market is constantly alive and thriving with activity as the countless vendors and shops present a utopia of local Tibetan arts, crafts and cultural specialties.

Day3

Lhasa highlight sightseeing tour: Drepung Monastery and Sera Monastery

Drepung Monastery, called Drepung Gompa in Tibetan, was founded at the foot of Mount Gambo Utse “Gephel” in 1416. It is on the outskirts of west Lhasa city and it was Tibet's largest and most influential monastery housing 10,000 monks in history. Drepung Monastery is one of the largest "great three" Gelukpa university monasteries of Tibet with the other two called Ganden and Sera Monastery behind. But today, Drepung Monastery houses about 700 monks and attracts thousands of pilgrims and visitors from around the world. Drepung is the largest of all Tibetan monasteries and is located on the Gambo Utse

The meaning of “Drepung” refers to a monastery of collecting rice because the white painted walls of the monastery appear like a mound of rice if viewed from a far. After the funding in 1416, Drepung monastery welcomed the first living Buddha in 1546. The most well known feature of the monastery is its large white pagodas and typical monastery architecture.

The famous annual Tibetan Shoton Festival celebration with its dramatic unfurling of a giant Thangka painting is held on the hillside which is just opposite to Drepung Monastery. So Drepung Monastery is a big highlight attraction in Lhasa and it becomes more and more popular in Tibet tour.

The Sera Monastery (1355–1435, founded by Jamchen Chojey of Sakya Yeshe, disciple of Tsongkhapa) is just located at the foot of Tatipu Hill and it about 6 km to the northeast direction of Potala Palace. It is famous for the Buddhism activities of” Monks Debate” which happens in afternoon from Monday to Saturday. This is one highlight attraction for travel in Lhasa Tibet.
